As fans, there is only so much we can do. We can pay money to go to the games, we can cheer, boo, laugh and cry, but for the most part the results are in the hands of the players. True that ‘home ice advantage’ and a loud crowd during a powerplay or at key times during the game can help swing the momentum

or pump the players up, but the key word there is help. Similarly, during this lockout, many fans feel helpless, and of course hopeless. It’s the owners v the players, and it seems like the fans are suffering most. The owners are still very wealthy, many players are still playing competitive hockey and all will eventually return to their multi-million dollar salaries, but for the fans it’s “wait and see” time. 

Fans are sitting back and resorting to expressing their frustrations on hockey pages all over the Internet. The growth of social media has seen a much more involved contingent of players voicing their displeasure on Twitter and the like. WeWantACup has decided to put on a rally – not a protest or a mob-chanting stunt – to give fans an opportunity to meet up and unite as a small group with a common concern. Furthermore, our aim is to support local businesses that are suffering from the lack of NHL hockey. Yes the OHL, AHL and KHL are entertaining, and should see a spike in interest but there’s nothing that compares to a packed Saturday night full of puck on Hockey Night in Canada, not only for the fans but also for the aforementioned local businesses. Furthermore, there’s something to be said for the affected traditions we have with family and friends that include making a night out of a hockey game, be it attending or watching on the tube at home or at a bar. These local businesses and threatened traditions need to be advocated for as they show how hockey is much more than just a game. We want to make some noise instead of sitting back and watching the lockout become part of the tradition of hockey. We don’t intend on stopping the lockout, but we want to advocate for how much more it affects than just players and owners.

Recently, Joffrey Lupul spoke of fans that will soon display how fed up they are with the happenings, and it could spark a more public voice for the fans. Join us as we look to make a little noise. Saturday night should feature hockey in TV, jerseys at the bar and a packed arena ready for another season. Are we to sit back and just silently accept a lockout every 8-10 years? We’re all too passionate and want the game back too badly not to show it. We’re not offering a solution to the lockout, and we’re not protesting the league, we’re showing that fans are just a small part of what’s being affected by the stoppage. Family traditions, servers, bars, restaurants and vendors are all forced to take a backseat and wait…

Fans are tired of waiting, and we want to show it. Join us on October 13^th for the “give us our game back” rally, and let your voice be heard. You might say “that’s not going to bring back hockey” and it won’t save the sport, but it certainly won’t make the situation any worse. It’s about uniting as fans with a common passion, not about making a controversial statement and solving the lockout. On Saturday, hockey should be on and it’s not. If that upsets you or makes you want to team up with other fans and show how much you want it back, then join us. If it doesn’t upset you, then frankly, you’re visiting the wrong website.
